What is Soap?

Soap has important role in our lives. Our skin needs to be cleansed morning and evening and so what we use on our bodies

should simply be gentle, non drying, hydrating and nourishing.

Soap has three main ingredients: oil (fatty acids), lye (Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide which is a highly corrosive alkali) and distilled water (or other kind of liquids such as milk, tea, juice, wine or beer etc.) When oil is mixed with lye solution in water a chemical process called "saponification" occurs. This process takes up to 4 weeks and the result is a soap with a high glycerin content. Glycerin is an emollient that softens and hydrates the skin.

Removal of glycerin in commercial soap makes it hard and long lasting, however its hydrating property is lost. In handmade soaps, every major component that has an important role in promoting hydration, softening and non drying of the skin, is preserved.
